Geek Tweaks
- Explorer XP - A beefed up version
of windows explorer (known to some as "My Computer"). Has a lot of useful features
such as being able to mass rename multiple files at once and much more.
- FoxIT Reader -
An alternative way to view PDF documents without needing the bloated, slow
Acrobat reader.
- Free Download Manager -
A free download manager/accelerator (which can integrate with your browser)
that allows resuming of interrupted downloads and fater downloading.
- Google Reader and the Google
Reader Notifier Firefox Extension - The best way to collect and read
RSS feeds from blogs and websites.
- IZArc - a free program to open archive
files (.zip, .rar, etc.)
- Launchy - A great program for easily
launching programs and more without going through your start menu.
- Open Office - a free office suite
for anyone who can't or won't pay for Microsoft Office.
- Pidgin (formerly Gaim) - a free, open
source, multiplatform IM client that can communicate with all the major IM
networks at once.
- Phrase Express - a great text
substitution tool. For example, I can type "cast" then tab in an
email (or any other program or window) and it will paste my casting cover letter
that I send to casting agents, or I can have it substitute my entire signature
automatically each time I type "sig". Many other functions available if you
want them like launching programs or websites. Also keeps a cache of things
you've copied to the clipboard so by pressing ctrl-alt-v (by default, but can
be changed to anything you want) you can easily bring up the clipboard cache
and paste any of the last several things you copied instead of just the last
thing you copied.
- Rocket
Dock - a really nice program that provides a highly configurable "dock" to
launch programs and folders.
- Stickies -
Puts sticky notes on your desktop. I use it for when I just need to jot some
temporary info down or many other uses.
- Trillian - The best multi-platform
IM client. The free version will be good enough for most people who just
want to have on IM client to connect to all the major networks but there
are a few more advanced features only available in the paid version.
- Firefox Extensions - My current crop of Firefox
Extensions.
